Why donate to artists careers? Why not just buy their artwork?
Obviously, many artists would like you to do both! I know I would. But I’m kind of bad at putting things like that into words, so I enlisted the help of an online writer. This is no different than when you are giving someone a birthday card (you still do that, right?) and you find the card that says exactly what you meant to say, but there it is inside the card, written by a total stranger. In this case, the writer is called ChatGPT. But they are saying all the things that I meant to say. And I had to change several parts of it, so it really is from my brain after all. Please read it.
Hello, art enthusiasts and champions of creativity!
Today, I’d like to share a special message about the importance of supporting artists directly, especially when they’re not represented by a traditional gallery, (like me). We believe that by donating to artists’ careers, we can make a profound impact on their artistic journeys and contribute to the flourishing of their talent. Let’s dive into why this support matters.
In a world where galleries have traditionally served as gatekeepers to the art world, many artists are exploring alternative paths to showcase their work. They’re bypassing the conventional route and embracing the digital age to connect with their audience directly. By doing so, they’re gaining independence and retaining greater control over their artistic expression. However, this newfound freedom also brings unique challenges, one of which is financial sustainability.
When artists step away from gallery representation, (as I have, deliberately) and from art fair and art show representation (for many reasons) they often assume additional responsibilities, including self-promotion, marketing, and managing their own exhibitions. These demands require not only time and effort but also financial resources. (A lot of financial resources)!
That’s where y’all, as art lovers, can make a significant difference. By donating to artists’ careers, you become their partners in creativity, providing crucial support to fuel their passion and dedication.
Direct donations enable artists to allocate funds where we need it most. Whether it’s investing in high-quality materials, securing a dedicated workspace, attending workshops or art residencies, or even covering living expenses during periods of creative exploration, every contribution helps lighten the burden and allows artists to focus on what they do best: creating exceptional art that touches our souls.
Moreover, when you donate directly to artists, you establish a deeper connection with their work. It’s a personal and meaningful way to engage with their artistic journey. You are invested! By participating in artists’ success, you become a part of their story, sharing in the joy and pride that accompanies our/their accomplishments. And in return, artists often show their gratitude by offering unique rewards or exclusive experiences to their patrons, further strengthening this beautiful bond between creator and supporter. (This will happen eventually).
Remember, the impact of your donation goes beyond monetary value. It fosters a thriving artistic ecosystem that celebrates diversity and innovation. By supporting artists directly, you promote a more inclusive art world, where talent can flourish regardless of traditional constraints or limitations. You become ambassadors of change, paving the way for emerging artists to showcase their unique perspectives and challenge the status quo.
So, dear friends, unite in your passion for art and uplift the voices of artists who forge their own paths. Explore artist websites, follow us on social media, and seek out opportunities to donate to their careers (especially, since you are here, to my career!). You can empower artists, nurture our creative spirit, and ensure that art continues to enrich everyone’s lives in countless inspiring ways.
Thank you for being a part of this transformative journey. You can make a difference, one donation at a time!
With warm regards, Shelly Leitheiser
